Landscaping Services in Mesilla, NM
Courtyard gardens, xeriscape, hardscaping, and irrigation designed for Mesilla’s historic adobe properties, river valley soils, and acequia-fed landscapes.

Landscapes Rooted in Mesilla’s History
Mesilla is one of the most storied villages in the Rio Grande valley. Its thick-walled adobe homes, walled courtyards, and narrow streets date back to the 1850s. That history shapes every landscape we build here. The Mesilla Historic District has design guidelines that affect fencing, wall heights, and plant choices. We know those rules and work within them.
The soil near the Rio Grande is heavy river clay, very different from the caliche found on the east mesa. Acequia irrigation is still part of the water picture for some properties. Cottonwood and pecan trees create dense shade that changes what ground cover and shrubs will grow. We plan around all of these factors so your landscape fits Mesilla, not just southern New Mexico in general.

What Makes Mesilla Landscapes Different
Mesilla sits in the Rio Grande flood plain at about 3,850 feet. The soil here is fertile river clay, not the caliche found on the east mesa. That means different drainage needs, different plant choices, and different irrigation planning than most of the Las Cruces area.
River Clay & Fertile Soil
Mesilla’s valley floor has heavy clay deposited by the Rio Grande over centuries. It holds moisture well but drains slowly. We amend beds and build raised planting areas when drainage is a concern.
Cottonwood & Pecan Management
Mature cottonwoods and pecans create dense shade and aggressive root systems. We select shade-tolerant ground covers and route irrigation lines to avoid root damage.
Acequia & Flood Zone Awareness
Some Mesilla properties still hold acequia water rights. Others sit in FEMA flood zones near the river. We account for both when grading, installing walls, and choosing plant locations.
Historic District Guidelines
The Mesilla Historic District has rules about wall heights, materials, and visible landscaping changes. We review the guidelines before drafting plans so your project passes review the first time.

Mesilla Landscaping FAQ
Do I need approval to change my landscaping in the Mesilla Historic District?
It depends on the scope. Visible changes to walls, fencing, and front-facing landscape features usually require review. We check the current guidelines before starting any design in the historic district and can handle the review process for you.
How do acequia water rights affect my irrigation system?
If your property has acequia rights, you may be able to flood-irrigate parts of your yard during scheduled turns. We can design your landscape to take advantage of acequia water for trees and larger plantings, then add a drip system for beds that need more precise watering.
What are the best shade trees for a Mesilla courtyard?
For smaller courtyards, Desert Willow and Vitex (Chaste Tree) work well. They stay manageable in size and bloom through summer. For larger spaces, Chilean Mesquite and Pistache give good canopy without the root problems of cottonwoods. We match the tree to your courtyard size and sun exposure.
Can you do xeriscape in the historic district without it looking out of place?
Yes. Xeriscape does not have to mean bare gravel and cactus. We use native grasses, flowering perennials like salvia and penstemon, and natural stone that blend with Mesilla’s adobe character. The result saves water but still feels lush and rooted in the village’s style.
How do you handle pecan tree care during landscape projects?
Pecans have wide root zones that are easy to damage during grading or trenching. We map root areas before digging, hand-trench near trunks, and avoid piling soil against bark. If a mature pecan needs pruning to let more light reach new plantings below, we handle that too.
